My first media server!

So, this dude updated his old server to a new beast of a machine. He gave me his old setup for me to tinker around with, and I would love to turn it into a media box so that I can dump everything on to it. I honestly have no experience running a server box, and I was looking for some advice. Here are the specs that I am aware of:

2u Casing
Intel g7esz server board
Onboard adaptec aic-7899g scsi raid chipset
18.2gb 68pin ultra320 scsi drive
dual p3 1ghz
1gb ram
old Linux OS

I am in some massive need of storage space, which means I need some recommendations for hard drives. It has 7 bays available, so I don't need to spend $400 on a super nice drive. I don't mind getting some used scsi drives. I also would love a recommendation on a new OS. My buddy has a copy of MS Server 2003, but I am open to other suggestions. So my questions are, will this be sufficient for a media host? Does anyone know of a good site to get used/new cheap scsi drives? What OS am I gonna want?

You can probably drum up some of those drives on ebay I bet. What is the brand of server? If it's an HP or Dell, look up the tech specs on it to see what memory it will take. Based on the chipset, sounding like a Dell. PM me the service tag number on it if you can. Linux would be a good start as they have some media server apps around. Either that or you are looking at like a media center edition of xp.

Actually now that I think of it, you could also do a craigslist posting looking for those drives. Might be an IT guy around that is looking to get rid of some for free.

Avaf may have some better recommendations on linux but I have always liked Ubuntu for a linux o/s. It has a nice install process and a clean gui.

SCSI drives are still expensive as all hell. I have some full sized (read: not standard) scsi drives sitting around that I might be willing to sell off (since my server has 4x drives in it already). Honestly though, if you're making a media server thats going to host files, you'd be better off getting yourself a NAS or external enclosure that you can raid with SATA drives, it'd be cheaper than buying SCSI drives. Just get one SCSI drive for the OS.

As far as OS goes, get yourself situated with some Linux action. If you're going pure media machine and nothing else, get yourself set up with MythTV. As per Loaded's suggestion, ubuntu has a myth flavor, mythbuntu, that combines the best of both.

Since he has that scsi raid onboard, I'd go two matching scsi drives and mirror them. If you can swing it, get a third as a hot spare.

shade is right on the nas though. Completely forgot about that.

Whoop, completely missed that it was a raid controller. Then yeah, snag 2 SCSI drives and make them the main OS drives. Don't need to be too big, since OS and software don't take too much room. Get like 2x36gb scsi drives and raid 1 them both.

Definitely set up a separate box for media storage though. NAS is a Good Thing(tm), even if its a thrown together box with 2472014721 SATA drives. All it needs to do is serve files, so it can be a clunker of a box.

heheh... all of this is so far over my head, but I think I'm catching a bit of it. I got a pretty good hookup. This guy pretty much gave me a free 300gb 10k scsi. I will play around with it and see what I come up with.

Just to get started, throw the 300gb into the box and grab mythbuntu, which is a mythtv brand of ubuntu. Easy to install, easy to set up. MythTV itself is really powerful. Its my recommendation for a media server. Worry about NAS and file storage later, since 300gb is decent to get you started. :)
